For two decades, the SEO game had one scoreboard: where you rank in Google's blue links. That scoreboard is being quietly replaced.
Today a growing share of searches end inside an AI answer — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini — before the user ever clicks a result. The question is no longer only “do I rank?” It's “does the answer mention me?” Those are different problems with different rules.
How answer engines choose sources
Answer engines don't reward the same things classic SEO did. They retrieve, select, and cite content based on how easy it is to extract a confident, attributable answer. In practice that means:
- Structure over prose. Clear definitions, direct answers, bullet lists and FAQs get lifted into answers because they're easy to quote.
- Freshness. Perplexity in particular weights recency — an article updated this quarter beats an identical one frozen two years ago.
- Authority and corroboration. Sources that agree with other trusted sources, cite original data, and clearly state who they are get picked more often.
Each engine has quirks. ChatGPT tends to lift structured lists and FAQs close to verbatim. Perplexity always cites and leans on authoritative, recent sources. Google's AI Overviews respond well to FAQ and HowTo schema and short, scannable definitions. The common thread: make the answer trivially easy to extract and attribute.
The 7-point AI-search readiness check
- Answer blocks. Does each key page open with a one- or two-sentence direct answer to the question it targets, before the build-up?
- Schema markup. Are FAQ, HowTo, Article and Organization schema in place so machines can parse your content and identity?
- FAQ coverage. Have you mapped the real questions people ask about your category and answered them explicitly?
- Freshness signals. Are pages dated and genuinely updated, so recency-weighted engines trust them?
- Citations and original data. Do you give engines something worth quoting — a statistic, a defined process, a clear claim?
- Entity clarity. Is it unambiguous who you are, what you do, and what you're an authority on, across your site and the web?
- Crawlability. Can AI crawlers actually reach and render your content, or is it buried behind scripts and blocks?
Why this is suddenly urgent
The shift is fast. Brands that ship answer blocks, structured markup and a tracked set of target prompts are showing up in AI answers within about 30 days — while competitors who wait stay invisible in the exact moment a buyer is asking. And because AI answers often show only a handful of sources, this is closer to winning position one than to ranking on page one. There isn't much room.
